Puerto Rico: Hope in the Dark is the story of the people of Puerto Rico and the faith, strength and hope that has sustained them in the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Maria. It is the most recent production by students in the Media, Communications and Visual Arts travel documentary course led by Professor Maria Luskay. The Producing the Documentary course is a well-regarded, award winning program at Pace. It has provided opportunities for many undergraduate and graduate students to broaden their knowledge and skill set in the areas of communications, research, and production. During the 14 week semester, students begin by looking for story, interviewees and learn as much as possible about the issue before departure. Traveling to the location during Spring Break, the students have hands-on experiences in the field, learning what it means to be part of a production team. They learn the value and importance of teamwork and organization as they go on location to find the story. In addition, they learn to solve problems and adapt to changes in the story as it develops. They use professional video cameras, drones, lights, etc., to film. Once the students come back from the trip, they organize their footage and start putting the story together. Students work against a tight deadline in order to have the film ready for its premiere at Jacob Burns Film Center in Pleasantville, NY and the Michael Schimmel Center for the Arts in Manhattan.
